Description

77178 Late 19th Century Antique Persian Tabriz Rug, 14'07 x 21'07.

Woven with reverence for a golden age of Persian artistry, this hand-knotted wool antique Tabriz rug from the Late 19th Century echoes the grandeur of the legendary Ardabil Carpet, commissioned during the reign of Shah Tahmasp of the Safavid Dynasty. At its heart lies a creamy-beige circular medallion, meticulously drawn with sixteen radiating points—a celestial bloom whose symmetry evokes the heavens themselves. Encircling it, a halo of pointed oval cartouches echoes the sacred geometry of mosque domes, grounding the rug in divine architectural tradition. Suspended from either pole of the medallion are ethereal hanging chandelier lamps, directly quoting the Ardabil masterpiece, casting imagined light upon the floral scrollwork that surrounds them.

The expansive field unfolds like a royal garden, dense with scrolling arabesques and stylized botanical forms. Blooming palmettes flourish amid undulating vinery, while serrated saz leaves and delicate blossoms whisper of Edenic splendor. The harmonious balance of form and flourish evokes the timeless gardens of Persia—places of contemplation, poetry, and paradise. Distressed by time, yet dignified in presence, the rug's softly faded palette—rich with burnt sienna, muted lapis, and antique ivory—lends it a haunting elegance, a memory preserved in thread and pattern.

At each corner, spandrels gracefully mirror the central medallion, their ivory-beige ground and stylized design echoing the spiritual symmetry and unity of Persian cosmology. They cradle the heart of the rug like the four cardinal directions enclosing a sacred sanctuary, guiding the eye inward and outward in contemplative rhythm. These medallion echoes act as visual verses, repeating the sacred geometry that binds the composition together.

The majestic frame is composed of a traditional cartouche border, its elongated panels flowing with floral arabesques, rosettes, and cloudband motifs. It is flanked by an inner pair of finely rendered double guard bands and an outer guard border, each filled with interlacing vine scrolls and protective motifs. Together, they form a living manuscript—an illuminated margin around the woven text of the central field.

This palatial size Tabriz rug is not merely a floor covering but a monument to dynastic pride and artistic refinement. Steeped in the legacy of the Safavid court ateliers and touched by the hands of late 19th-century masters, it stands as a meditative threshold between the sacred and the sublime—an enduring expression of Persia’s visual poetry and spiritual grandeur.
