Description
74402 Antique Persian Heriz Rug, 12'03 x 15'06.
Like a celestial compass etched in wool, this magnificent hand-knotted antique Persian Heriz rug captures the grandeur of the early 20th century. At the heart of its vast composition lies a stately octofoil medallion, its intricate form unfurling in layers of crimson and ivory, adorned with delicate botanical scrolls. At either end of the medallion, flaming palmette pendants blaze outward like heraldic crests, radiating strength and balance. This medallion anchors the composition, drawing the eye inward while echoing the rhythmic geometry and bold articulation of Heriz village weavings.
The midnight navy blue field serves as a deep and infinite sky, across which the vine-like arabesques and stylized florals drift like constellations. Elongated serrated leaves, hyacinth blossoms, and angular shrubs spread across this inky expanse with graceful precision, each motif hand-knotted with a measured cadence. The intensity of the navy blue backdrop enhances the contrast of surrounding hues- tan, pink, pistachio, sky blue, and beige—all of which shimmer like stardust upon the night. This interplay of color and form evokes not only visual depth but also a sense of enduring calm and architectural harmony.
Framing this pictorial splendor are ivory corner spandrels that echo the geometric contours of the central medallion. These luminous spandrels blossom with an eclectic parade of botanical forms—forked vines, stylized peonies, and mythical foliage—creating an enchanting counterpoint to the dark field. Their clarity, both in color and design, imparts a breath of airiness and refinement, acting as windows into the soul of the rug’s design lineage. Their jagged outlines reinforce the medallion’s architectural reach, offering both balance and emphasis to the composition’s commanding heart.
The antique Persian Heriz rug is enclosed by a magnificent main border filled with expressive palmettes and scrolling vine motifs, rendered in a brick-red ground and saturated with hues of sky blue, light green, and beige. This Herati border is flanked by double inner and outer floral meander guard bands, each one a delicate garland of rosettes and leaflets that trace the rug’s perimeter like protective amulets. Altogether, this masterwork not only celebrates the artistic heritage of the Heriz weaving tradition, but also embodies the harmony between structured geometry and nature-inspired ornamentation—a woven legacy of enduring beauty and poetic order.
