The Savonnerie style of rug inherits its name through its link to the method of manufacturing involved in its making, which incorporates that of one of the most prestigious Europeans form of knotted-pile carpets of its time, flourishing in technique and trend from the middle of the 17th century for nearly two hundred years, until the early 20th century.

This particular rug is characterized by designs that were customary for Savonnerie arrangements, illustrating this style of predominate French influence with patterns of ornate armorial medallions, held in intricate borders of rinceaux and winding arrangements of garnished foliage. The symmetrical placements of opulent frondescence, with ribbon and ornamentation to further compliment them in decadence, held antiquated sway in these forms of display and were used commonly during a period when Rococo infiltrated and commanded the French luxury arts of the time.
