Description

77631 Antique Chinese Art Deco Pictorial Rug Inspired by Walter Nichols 08'10 x 11'06. This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Art Deco rug features a color-blocked field and border scheme festooned with large, glorious sprays of flowers, birds, vases, and butterflies. Lotuses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and plum blossoms elegantly spread across the composition, breaking across the borders and field, creating a sense of splendor and vitality than cannot be contained. The colorful, intricate floral motifs showcase lotuses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and plum flowers blossoming in a swirl of tantalizing vinery. This ensemble of flowers, when appearing together, represents the Four Seasons, while each of the flowers carries its own meaning in Chinese culture. The lotus, the flower of summer, symbolizes purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. Peonies, the flower of spring, represent unparalleled beauty and honor; they have long been regarded as a symbol of wealth. Chrysanthemums, the flower of autumn, are associated with long life and a golden retirement; the dried petals of the flower immersed in wine were once thought to bring longevity to those who drank it. Plum blossoms, the flower of winter, represent fortitude and resilience, since the long-lived tree blooms brightly during the cold of winter. Butterflies are thought to represent happiness. On the left side of the composition is a bird perched on top of a pagoda meanwhile two ducks swim near the bridge. Seven birds, possibly geese, flying in a V formation across the field representing marital fidelity. On the right side is a flowering cloisonné vase, symbolizing peace and tranquility. The lovely main border features a variety of vase and Shou motifs—including Ruyi clouds, stylized florals, a bridge, and ducks —set against a navy blue background and the right corner patterned with a lattices fretwork. In the lower left inner guard border features an ancient fret Meander design called leiwen or “thunder pattern.” This pattern interlaces the wan symbol, a Chinese character meaning “ten thousand,” with a winding key design that symbolizes long life and never-ending joy. With its depth of meaning, fine attention to detail, and glorious composition, this stunning antique Chinese Art Deco rug would bring a touch of Jazz Age splendor to any interior. Rendered in variegated shades of red, navy blue, tan, celadon, royal blue, brown, gold, purple, persimmon, gray, ink blue, and cornflower blue. Perfect for a living room, front room, dining room, wine cellar, conservatory, royal suite, executive suite, bedroom, private library, state room, great room, private Chambers, drawing room, billiards room, trophy room, man cave, game room, music room, sunroom, masters retreat, formal vestibule, or hotel lobby.
