Serapi Rugs

Rare Antique Persian Textiles for the Discerning Collector

Serapi Persian rugs feature a finer, earlier expression of the Heriz weaving tradition. Associated with the Heriz district of Iranian Azerbaijan, these pieces are prized by collectors and interior designers who prioritize culturally significant antique rugs with a bold presence.

Serapi rugs are a type of Persian carpet that are best suited to grand residential spaces, boutique hotels, and high-end commercial interiors. Shop Serapi rugs for sale at Esmaili Rugs to discover authentic vintage and antique textiles.

  • The History of Serapi Rugs

Most of our Serapi rugs for sale originated during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Due to the mountainous terrain and isolated villages, weavers of the time developed generational weaving traditions. Antique Serapi rugs were woven on vertical looms by teams of artisans in close collaboration.

These hand-knotted Persian rugs featured a fusion of Tabriz court carpet patterns and indigenous tribal geometry, often blending aristocratic refinement with village authenticity. Although a significant number of authentic Serapi Oriental rugs were woven before 1910 and qualify as antiques, the Esmaili Collection also includes vintage Serapi rugs and Serapi-inspired designs that reflect this beloved aesthetic. Shop the same pieces that were so popular among European and American collectors during the late 1800s at Esmaili Rugs today.

  • Design Characteristics of Serapi Persian Rugs

Some of the design elements that define antique Serapi rugs include:

    • Bold, large-scale patterns with an open composition, featuring geometric medallions flanked by striking corner spandrels.
    • Soft, luminous color palettes that prioritize natural hues, like terracotta, ivory, and dusty blue.
    • Handspun wool from sheep grazing throughout the mountainous Azerbaijan region contributed to the durability and natural luster associated with Serapi rugs. Local pasture conditions and mineral-rich water, traditionally believed to contain traces of copper, are often credited with the exceptional quality of the wool, while the rugs themselves are prized for the graceful patina they develop over time.
    • Serapi rugs are typically hand-knotted using the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, although variations exist depending on the workshop and weaving tradition.
    • Compared to Heriz rugs, Serapi rugs typically feature more spacious, refined compositions, softer color palettes, and finer craftsmanship. While both originate from the Heriz region of northwestern Iran and share bold geometric influences, Serapi rugs are generally considered the more elegant and collectible variation.
