It features a round centre medallion surrounded by an all-over floral pattern of cloud-like forms, blooming lotuses, bats, chrysanthemums and leafy tendrils. The cloud-like floral petals extend and radiate from an organic, ogival center medallion into the field and toward the corners and corner spandrels. Chrysanthemums represent long life. Bats are seen to augur good fortune, happiness, and prosperity; they are primarily seen on rugs that were created for the domestic Chinese market. It is enclosed with a complementary border flanked by a midnight colored outer guard band. Aside from the rich cultural symbolism, this antique Chinese rug creates a sense of subtle sophistication.
