05'09 x 10'10. This hand knotted wool vintage Moroccan Beni Ouarain rug
features two large diamonds surrounded by additional bands with symbolic motifs
creating an expansion effect for the two main lozenge motifs. The expanding
bands spread across an abrashed creamy-beige field are composed of squares,
cross or cruciform motifs, X-shapes and chevrons, diagonal rectangles,
lozenges, and comb or ladder symbols. In Moroccan rugs, male motifs often
appear on the outer portions of the composition, framing and enclosing the
female motifs. This presentation can be seen as symbolizing fertility, as well
as protection and the sanctuary of the family. The tribal symbols of diamonds,
chevrons, and X-shapes are usually thought to symbolize womanhood, conception,
fertility, and pregnancy. The ladder and comb motifs traditionally represent
the male's presence. This Beni Ouarain Moroccan rug is ornamented with varying
symbolic Berber Tribe symbols, all of them equally as elaborate and hold a
significant place in Moroccan traditional design. With its Mid-Century Modern
