From Esmaili Rugs Collection. This hand-knotted wool vintage Persian Kilim gallery rug features
three stepped diamond-shaped medallions spread across an ink blue field. Large
tree of life motifs, which represent the path from Earth to Heaven, and small
cypress trees, representing rebirth, decorate the centers of the medallions. An
array of ancient tribal motifs scattered throughout the field in a vivid
display of botehs, birds, vases and additional cypress trees. The widely used
boteh motif is thought to symbolize life with its resemblance to a number of
natural forms, including leaves, bushes, pine cones, sprouts and flames. Birds
are thought to represent faith and fertility. The flowering plants blooming
forth from vases further add to the composition’s colorful sense of life. The
innermost orange border features a blossom and leaf meander design, echoing the
botanical motifs used throughout the central area. The diamond pattern in the
royal blue border repeats the diamond-shaped blooms sprinkled throughout the
composition. The simple orange ladder or comb outer border ties together the
outlining elements of the piece and provides an essential finishing touch.
Though the colors are saturated and strong, the disciplined manner in which
they are handled makes the piece vibrant and alive but never overwhelming. The
interplay of the various elements of this Persian Kilim gives it a wonderful
