This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features a rounded open center medallion comprised of a swirl of lotus flowers floating on an abrashed brick red field. Glorious sprays of intertwined lotuses and plum blossoms festoon the color-blocked borders, spilling into the field and spandrels, while small sprigs of each flower anchor each end of the field. Traditionally, the lotus is seen to symbolize purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. Plum flowers represent fortitude and resilience, since the long-lived tree blooms brightly during the cold of winter. The fine detailing in this piece when combined with its classic color palette based around earthy reds, clean blues, ivory, and pops of peach and chartreuse accents gives the piece a great deal of spirit and exuberance.
