This hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak
runner features pictorial design with repeated mosque motifs along the center
of an abrashed red field. Sometimes called a landscape carpet or cemetery
carpet, the design of mosques or houses with trees was once thought to
illustrate an Islamic cemetery. The format of this particular Oushak runner is
suggestive of a prayer rug design, though the traditional mihrab arch is
omitted. The open inside border on each end curls inward, while large floral
motifs reminiscent of lamps, a common feature of prayer rugs, are suspended in
the opening. Additional lamp-like motifs hang in the niches created by the
curling border. This main open border features an angular meander motif with
calyxes and carnations, while small trefoil blooms spring forth from its edges
on both sides. A simple trefoil meander outer border mimics the small blooms
used throughout the composition. With its unique design, warm colors, and just
the right amount of age-wear, this handsome vintage Turkish Oushak runner would
enliven any space. Rendered in variegated shades of ruby red, scarlet red,
brick red, burgundy saffron yellow, gold, orange, tangerine, ivory, cream,
beige, oyster gray, gray, stone gray, slate, greige, taupe, chocolate, sienna,
