The Imperial Medallion: A Vintage Persian Heriz Masterpiece of Timeless Grandeur
This hand knotted wool vintage Persian Heriz rug commands attention through the bold architectural language for which northwest Persian weaving is celebrated. A monumental medallion rises from the saturated red field, framed by expansive blue corner spandrels and a succession of intricate borders. Its palette of saturated red, midnight navy, royal blue, ivory, ochre, and verdant green gives the exceptional composition a stately presence, while the vigorous geometry preserves the character of Heriz craftsmanship as an expression of heritage and prestige.
The center medallion is constructed around a compact rosette enclosed by cruciform geometry, stepped contours, angular palmettes, and serrated leaves. The rosette signifies beauty, wholeness, and divine order, while the surrounding lotus-derived forms evoke purity, rebirth, and spiritual continuity. At either end, imposing flaming palmette pendants extend along the vertical axis. Their flame-like silhouettes suggest illumination, vitality, and ascension, transforming the medallion into a symbolic emblem of cosmic balance and enduring life.
Across the sumptuous red field, geometricized blossoms, rosettes, palmettes, branching foliage, and stylized leaves create an abundant botanical world. Rosettes celebrate earthly beauty and completion; palmettes carry associations with prosperity and flourishing life; leaves signify regeneration and the continuation of generations. The blue corner spandrels contain angular branches, flower heads, and tree-like devices that evoke the iconic Tree of Life motif—representing immortality, growth, and the connection between earthly existence and the heavens. Their cool tonality gives the central composition a majestic visual frame.
A distinguished Samovar turtle vine-scroll border encircles the field, combining rhythmic floral forms traditionally associated with longevity, protection, and enduring fortune. Double floral meander guard borders provide the final enclosure, their uninterrupted progression reinforcing continuity and abundance. Rich in symbolic meaning and graphic authority, this remarkable Heriz offers the collector an extraordinary masterpiece of Persian weaving culture—an exquisite work of art whose scale, artistry, and unmistakable presence confer cultivated distinction upon an important interior.
