  • History of Persian Qum Rugs

Compared to many Persian weaving centers, Qum is relatively modern, with production gaining prominence in the early 20th century. Despite its newer origins, the region quickly established a reputation for excellence through highly skilled workshops and master weavers. Qum rugs for sale often reflect a workshop tradition rather than village production, resulting in consistently refined compositions. Today, they are considered some of the most sophisticated examples of persian carpets, valued for both artistry and technical achievement.

  • Design Characteristics and Motifs

Persian Qum rugs are distinguished by their use of silk, with foundations typically made of cotton or silk. Many Qum silk rugs feature intricate medallions, floral arabesques, and finely drawn garden scenes, including Tree of Life designs, hunting scenes, garden (Paradise) layouts, prayer rugs, and pictorial or tableau compositions. Qum carpets are known for their high knot density, which allows for precise, detailed patterns and a luminous surface. These hand knotted Persian rugs, sometimes signed by master weavers, often incorporate rich jewel tones alongside softer ivory and gold palettes, creating a sense of depth and refinement rarely matched in other weaving traditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Qum carpets so special?

The Qum rugs for sale at Esmaili Rugs are a classic display of this unique weaving tradition. Their knot density and premium materials result in luxurious handmade rugs that are ideal for opulent home decor or impressive hospitality interior design. The Qum weaving tradition is special, as it draws on Iranian techniques but applies them with a higher knot density for greater design definition and a remarkable luster.

How can you tell if a Qum silk rug is real?

Because these are handcrafted textiles, there are always some irregularities in the final result. Examine Qum rugs for sale to discover whether they have slight imperfections in the symmetry of the design and knotting. Other ways to authenticate these rugs include:

  • Ensuring that the fringe is an extension of the rug's foundation, rather than sewn on separately along the border.
  • Checking that the back of the rug shows the same design (though not the same appearance) as the front.
  • Looking for signatures in the border areas, as some of the most famous Qum weavers may sign their creations.

What are Persian Qum rugs made of?

There are many kinds of materials you can expect to find in a Qum textile: Kork wool, pure silk, cotton or silk foundations, or combined fibers. Kork wool is especially soft wool shorn from the neck and shoulders of a sheep, and allows for tighter weaving than other materials.

How do you clean a Qum silk carpet?

We always recommend professional cleaning and rug renewal for silk rugs. Between services, make sure to avoid excess moisture, which can compromise its integrity, and direct sunlight, which can fade its colors. Immediately blot up spills to prevent dye bleeding.
