A Brief Overview of the History of Turkish Oushak Textiles

The fine art of Oushak weaving was developed several centuries ago in and around Uşak, Turkey, during the early years of the Ottoman Empire. During the Ottoman Empire’s golden age, sultans and other royalty commissioned specially made Oushak rugs for mosques. These rugs were popular in court circles and were also presented as prestigious gifts to foreign dignitaries. Historically, Oushak rugs were often grouped together with Anatolian rugs. However, advanced methods of examining historical rugs now enable rug collectors and scholars to differentiate Oushaks from traditional Turkish carpets.

The antique and vintage Oushak rugs in our collection feature a variety of motifs, such as star medallions, lobed medallions, palmettes, and arabesques.

  • The Revival and Evolution of Oushak Rugs

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Oushak weaving declined. Oushak production experienced a significant revival in Western Anatolia during the 19th century. Oushak textiles made after 1900 encompass a wide variety of sizes and designs, including medium area rugs featuring stunning medallion designs and intricate patterns that incorporate scatterings of palmettes and vine scrolls, as well as smaller images of bold medallions. Whether you prefer modern or vintage Oushak rugs, these stunning pieces will dynamically transform any room from nondescript to unforgettable with their quietly intense palettes, detailed motifs, and lustrous wool.

  • Luxury for Homes & Hospitality Spaces

Oushak is the English spelling of Uşak, the Turkish city associated with this rug-making tradition. Renaissance paintings document Anatolian carpets in European interiors, reflecting their prestige among wealthy households.

High-end interior designers, architects, and discriminating businesses choose these rugs because they adore the warm splashes of color, old-world elegance, and cultural richness. Imbue your space with historical significance when you browse Oushak rugs in Dallas today.

Oushak Rug FAQ

What are Oushak rugs made out of?

Oushak rugs can have wool-on-wool or wool-on-cotton foundations. It depends on workshop, weaver, and region, such as Turkey, India, and Pakistan. Pile height depends on how the yarn is cut and finished.

How do you clean and maintain an Oushak rug?

Antique rugs require care tailored to age, condition, and construction. Have fragile or repaired pieces assessed before cleaning. You should vacuum regularly using a device with a brushless suction head and rotate the rug every few months to balance wear and tear; however, this is not recommended for antique carpets with fragile foundations, worn pile, loose fringe, or compromised repairs.

If you spill anything on your rug, gently blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth. Never scrub the rug, use bleach, or use hot water.

Esmaili Rugs also recommends professional rug cleaning every few years, depending on foot traffic, environmental conditions, soil accumulation, and the rug's structural condition.

What's the difference between Indian, Pakistani, and Turkish Oushak rugs?

The main difference is where they’re made and their connection to the original Oushak tradition. Turkish Oushak rugs originate from Uşak and the surrounding region of Western Anatolia. Indian and Pakistani Oushak-style rugs are reproductions inspired by that Turkish design heritage.

Materials, knotting, pile height, colors, and finishing can vary by workshop and individual rug, so country of origin alone doesn’t determine quality. At Esmaili Rugs, our collection includes Turkish Oushak rugs and reproductions from India and Pakistan. Our team can help you compare each piece’s origin, age, construction, and condition to find the right fit for your space.
