The Classic Herati pattern, also known as the mahi or fish pattern, is amongst the most widespread and well known of all Persian designs, consisting of a flower centered in a diamond accompanied by curving lanceolate leaves that resemble fish. In most rugs, the motif appears as a repeated small-scale pattern, but in this Turkish Oushak rug, the central motif fills the entire field with a variety of floral embellishments. Simple boteh and cross guard borders flank the wide main border featuring large palmettes connected by rectilinear vines.
