77239 Antique Chinese Peking Pictorial Rug, 09'00 x 11'04.

This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features pictorial scenes of phoenixes on both ends of an abrashed chocolate brown field decorated with an all-over pattern of scrolling acanthus leaves. Pairs of large phoenixes are perched on a tile or woven floor covering with a large urn holding blooming lotuses. As in most Chinese rugs, each image carries a great deal of cultural significance and meaning. Phoenixes are amongst the most treasured of Chinese symbols, representing auspiciousness, elegance, Virtue, nobility, honor, integrity and peace. The urns feature the Shou character, which in Chinese means “long life.” The lotus symbolizes purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. Additional lotuses along with chrysanthemums, which also symbolize long life, decorate the border.

While the majority of oriental rugs tend to draw the eye towards the center of the rug, in this Chinese Peking rug, the focal points are at the two ends of the piece.
