This hand knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak runner features a series of hooked hexagonal pole medallions in alternating colors spread across an abrashed onyx field. Dramatic and bursting with energy, a variety of traditional Anatolian symbols are expertly interlaced into a striking composition. The medallions each contain large wolf’s mouth motifs with diamonds in the centre, while partial versions of the motif reach from the edges towards the centre. The wolf’s mouth motif, also known as wolf’s track, is seen to protect against wolves, the primary threat to the weaver’s herds. Diamonds are seen to ward off evil. Doubled ram’s horns, representing masculinity and power, appear in the spandrels at one end of the field. The attractive border features diamonds enclosed within rectangles set against a checkerboard gridded backdrop. The piece’s warm and earthy color palette based around oranges, greens, golds, and browns make the bold designs really pop, especially when set against the black field, giving the piece tremendous graphic appeal.
