This hand-knotted wool new contemporary Oushak-style rug features an all-over geometric pattern overlaid upon an abrashed neutral field. The attractive design is comprised of offset rows of oblong polygons decorated with geometric motifs, and smaller rows of Memling guls, a design named for the 13th century painter Flemish painter whose paintings often contained depictions of rugs that used this style of gul. An assortment of open blossoms fills the spaces between the medallions. Flanked by delicate rosette secondary borders, the main border features a classic turtle vine motif with samovar-shaped palmettes. The versatile color palette is sophisticated, yet rustic. The steely blues and warm orange hues pop when set against the otherwise neutral shades of gray, beige, and vanilla. In some areas, there is also the effect of natural wear and tear in an erased design, as if the paint has chipped away from the main pattern to a fashionable, rustic effect.
