Description:-
78941 Late 19th Century Antique Caucasian Shirvan Kilim Rug, 02'08 x 03'08.
This handwoven wool antique Caucasian Shirvan kilim rug, dating back to the 1880s, Late 19th Century, is a striking example of traditional Caucasian artistry. Woven by skilled hands, this antique Caucasian flatweave rug embodies the intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors characteristic of Shirvan kilims. With alternating horizontal bands of geometric medallions and smaller diamond-shaped motifs, the rug’s design presents a harmonious balance of boldness and subtlety. The deep reds, indigos, and earthy tones create a rich canvas that both captivates the eye and tells a story of the tribal life from which it emerged.
At the heart of the design are the Bereket motifs adorned with a central lozenge, symbolizing fertility. These medallions, flanked by Hands on Hips (elibelinde), echo the mother goddess, also representing motherhood and fertility. The Ram's Horn symbols signify the male's presence, offering protection and warding off evil, while the surrounding geometric shapes reflect the weaver’s connection to nature and tribal life.
The rug’s borders are framed by a series of diamond-shaped motifs in alternating red, beige, and indigo hues, representing continuity and protection. These repeating patterns are common in Shirvan kilims, symbolizing a sense of unity and the cyclical nature of life. The alternating stripes at the top and bottom of the kilim, woven in earthy browns and neutral tones, create a grounding effect, tying the vibrant central design to the natural world. These striped sections were often used in Shirvan kilims to provide structure and balance to the more intricate central designs.
This antique Shirvan kilim is more than a piece of woven art—it is a historical artifact that bridges past and present. The craftsmanship reflects the weaver’s mastery of color, form, and symbolic expression, showcasing the depth of Caucasian weaving traditions. Whether displayed on the floor or used as a wall hanging, this Late 19th Century Caucasian kilim carries with it a sense of timeless beauty, cultural heritage, and the enduring spirit of the Shirvan weavers who crafted it over a century ago.
