Description:-
78988 Antique Afghan Baluch Prayer Rug, 02'06 x 04'03.
This hand-knotted wool antique Baluch prayer rug, dating back to the 1890s, showcases the rich cultural symbolism and spiritual meanings embedded in the craftsmanship of Afghan Baluch weavers. The central feature of this rug is the mihrab, an arched design representing the prayer niche found in mosques, guiding worshippers towards Mecca. This sacred space is not merely decorative but serves as a focal point for devotion. Rising from a triangular protection amulet, the Tree of Life motif reaches toward the mihrab, symbolizing immortality, growth, and the connection between heaven and earth. The Tree of Life, presented in a stylized, geometric form, reflects the weaver's hope for blessings and good fortune, deeply rooted in their tribal beliefs.
Surrounding the Tree of Life are a multitude of esoteric symbols that add layers of protection and spiritual meaning to the design. The S-hooks, seen throughout the brown field, act as protective symbols, believed to ward off the evil eye and malevolent spirits. The inclusion of boteh motifs, resembling teardrop or flame-like shapes, represents the potential for growth, regeneration, and renewal. Further enhancing the rug’s symbolic strength, the fetter motifs appear as repeating patterns, offering additional protection and symbolizing the continuity of bonds, especially between family and loved ones.
Further ornamenting the field, ram's horn motifs—a classic Baluch design element—offer power, strength, and protection. These symbols reflect the weaver's tribal heritage and their desire for spiritual resilience and strength. Additionally, the crosses and stars are woven into the design as talismans against evil spirits, guiding the owner with divine protection and a sense of celestial presence. These motifs emphasize the belief that the rug serves not just as a physical prayer mat but as a spiritual safeguard for its user.
Framing the main design is an intricate series of borders, including an inner meander Vitruvian scroll pattern, symbolizing water and spiritual purification, a core element of Islamic tradition. The wavy lines of this border allude to the life-giving and cleansing force of water. Additionally, serrated and hooked symbols in the outer borders further emphasize protection, creating a multi-layered spiritual defense for the owner. The rich earth tones, deep reds, and dark blues combined with the symbolic patterns make this Baluch prayer rug a deeply spiritual and protective artifact, ideal for both prayer and artistic admiration.
