This hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak rug features three interconnected hooked diamond medallions with ram’s horn pendants spread across an abrashed brick red field. Each medallion contains a variety of traditional Anatolian symbols surrounding a superimposed rectangular medallion with tree pendants and a quatrefoil floret in the center. Interlinked S-shapes form a lattice that curves around the medallions. A wide array of traditional Anatolian symbols are scattered throughout the field and within the medallions, including small S-shapes, triangular amulets, diamonds, fertility motifs, as well as repeating the quatrefoil florets borrowed from the medallions. Traditionally, the S symbol represents hooks, diamonds represent eyes, while amulets represent traditional charms known as muskas that were often carried in triangular cases. All of these symbols are seen to protect against evil. The fertility motifs that appear combine the symbols of both man and woman, often referred to as ram’s horn and hands-on-hips motifs, into one design with a diamond in the center. The attractive main border expertly echoes the geometric designs of the field into a unique design of hooked florets contained within a lattice connected by stepped diamonds. The striking S borders and barber’s pole listels frame the composition with effervescent flair.
