Description

73692 Gobelins Inspired Tapestry, 06'00 x 07'03.

This hand-woven wool Louis XIV style tapestry features Chateau Neuf Saint-Germain, from the series of tapestries 'The Months or Royal Residences', produced in the Gobelins Workshop commissioned by Louis XIV and were designed by Charles le Brun (1619-1690). Two ionic columns frame each side of the distant Le Château Neuf Saint Germain. Below the chateau, it opens onto an inconspicuous view of the Seine river valley while a party of ladies and horsemen ride through the countryside. On the top of the tapestry, a center cartouche displaying the architectural motif of the French Coat of Arms showcasing three gold fleurs-de-lys. Intertwining garland wreaths of winter fruits and gourds hang from the top and wrap around the two ionic columns. In the foreground of the portico, a basket of flowers sits next to the left column and in the middle a female figure drapes fabric with floral garland towards the right column. The French style tapestry is enclosed with a border of flowers, fruits, and ribbons and the Arms of Louis XIV are highlighted on the vertical sides of the border.

With its commitment to tradition and heart full of whimsy, this Baroque style wall hanging can enliven nearly any opulent period-interior with color and vitality. Well-suited for French, Rococo, Louis XIV, Louis XI, Louis XV, Rococo, Chippendale, Regal, Aubusson, Baroque, Renaissance, Old World, Traditional, European, and Savonnerie inspired interiors with Gobelins or Beauvais style. Whether in a formal setting with elaborate furnishings or in an Ottoman style interior, this chateau tapestry will bring vibrant life where it is displayed. The Chateau-Neuf de Saint-Germain-en-Laye tapestry is part of the series, The Tenture de Maisons Royals, commissioned by Louis XIV in 1670. The twelve tapestries featured a residence King Louis XIV and each wall hanging portrayed a month of the year.
